Iconic Wedding Dresses In Film : ‘The Duchess’
Today on The Wedding Secret, let’s jump back a few centuries to take a look at the flamboyant yet understated bridal gown worn by Keira Knightley (as Georgiana) in the 2008 film ‘The Duchess’
Created by multi-award-winning costume designer Michael O’Connor, this gorgeous gown, specially commissioned for the film, reflects the extravagance of dresses worn by wealthy brides in the 18th century.

As you can see above, this stunning cream crinolined and corseted silk gown is heavily decorated with puffed silk satin and intricate stitching. The sleeves are large and draping, as was the fashion of the time, and Georgiana wears small delicate flowers and ribbon in her hair.
Although supposedly understated for such a grand celebration (this historical wedding took place in secret as Georgiana’s parents didn’t welcome onlookers), this outfit still appears very extravagant compared to today’s modern bridal gowns – we can even see oversize diamonds decorating the bodice!
